Year 5 and 6 Explore Diversity Topic with Self-Portraits
Year 5 and 6 have been focussing on the topic of diversity. They have used Art as a tool to celebrate how unique everyone is within their class and school. The children produced wonderful self-portraits and worked on this exciting cross-curriculum project within English and PSHE.
Pupils talked about self-esteem, self-acceptance and how it is important to be happy with who we are and to recognise what makes us special. A main source of inspiration came from Black-American Illustrator, Vanessa Brantley-Newton. She celebrates self-love and acceptance of all cultures through her work, and hopes to inspire young readers to find their own voices.
Year 5 and 6 really enjoyed the project and had the opportunity to develop their collage techniques, as well as talking and working partner skills. The pupils also wrote a poem about themselves in English.
A Year 6 Pupil commented: ‘’I am really pleased with how I managed to create a true likeness of me’.”
