Back to school with confidence: how to support your child’s Transition to a new school year

As the new term begins, the air is filled with a unique mix of excitement and a few quiet nerves. While our children are eager to see their friends and meet new teachers, the transition back to school can be a significant change for them—and for us as parents.

At Cricklade Manor Prep, we believe that a smooth transition is a team effort. Here’s our guide to helping your child settle in with confidence and enthusiasm, ensuring they are ready to thrive from day one.

Re-establish the Routine

Routines provide a sense of security and predictability, which can be incredibly reassuring for children. In the weeks leading up to the new term, begin to gradually shift your family’s schedule back to a school-year rhythm. This includes moving bedtimes earlier and getting back into a consistent morning routine. A little preparation goes a long way in making the first school day feel less chaotic and more calm.

Listen, Acknowledge, and Reassure

Take the time to talk to your child about the upcoming term. Ask them what they are most looking forward to and, just as importantly, if they have any worries. Acknowledge their feelings, letting them know that it’s perfectly normal to feel a bit nervous. Remind them of the friendships they already have and the wonderful teachers who are so excited to welcome them back. A calm, reassuring conversation can help a child feel heard and prepared.

Focus on the Exciting New Opportunities

Shift the conversation from the familiar to the new and exciting. Talk about the fun projects they might tackle, the new topics they’ll explore in lessons, and the new friends they might make. This is a great opportunity to get them excited about the adventure ahead. You can even browse the school’s extracurricular offerings together, like our sports clubs or creative arts sessions, to find a new passion to explore this term.
