Verse Speaking Finals

Finalists of the Junior and Senior Verse Speaking Competition performed their poems superbly in front of an appreciative audience of family and friends. The event, which has been an annual fixture in the school’s calendar for some time, enables all children from Y3-8 to learn and perform a poem in front of their class. Following this, a lucky few are selected by their English teachers to proceed to the final.

This year the Senior Competition (Y5-8) was held on Tuesday 8 October. 16 finalists performed a range of poems and the standard was incredibly high. In fact, another prize had to be awarded, such was the quality on show. The winner was J-J, with an outstanding rendition of ‘The Marrog’. The three runners-up were: Samuel, Evie and Toby who each interpreted their poems with confidence and expression.

The Junior Competition (Y3-4) followed on Wednesday 9 October and was contested eagerly between the 10 performers. It was lovely to see such young children overcome their nerves and speak with such clarity and inflection. Once again, selecting the prize winners proved a tricky ordeal for the judges. However, Julian, with an expressive and fluent version of ‘The Can-Can Poem’, was the winner, with Victor and Siri selected as the deserved runner-up. Well done, to all the competitors for their hard work and excellent performances
