The Modern Foreign Languages department now offers the teaching of Spanish and Russian as well as French. To complement their learning of the language, the pupils also discover various aspects of the culture, geography and history of the country.
French is still the primary language taught with all children, from Nursery to Year 8, having at least one lesson a week. Spanish is taught in Years 2, 3, 5 and 6. In Year 2 children are taught a different language each term (French, Spanish and Russian) with the view to increase pupils’ appreciation of different languages and cultures. Pupils also have another chance to learn Russian during Year 8. This breadth of choice gives our pupils a wider understanding of the world and open-mindedness towards other cultures and customs.
Languages are taught through a mixture of communicative and more traditional styles, with emphasis on the four key skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. We aim to inspire an enthusiasm for language learning and lay foundations for the future study of further languages. By the time pupils leave Cricklade Manor Prep, they're equipped with a solid linguistic structure upon which they can study for their GCSE with ease.
Pupils benefit from being taught by two specialist linguist teachers. Their cultural input enriches the pupils’ overall language learning experience. We encourage our pupils to prepare and present role-plays and act out scenes in the classroom, or as part of an assembly. The Year 6 children also have the opportunity to run a French café. Pupils are given opportunities to visit France as part of our foreign trip program. Year 7 pupils have the opportunity to spend five days in Paris (usually in May).
Pupils develop good language learning habits, which will build a strong academic foundation for further study.
